“Imagination is more important than knowledge” – Albert Einstein

Beyond Imagination
It’s difficult to comprehend the complexity of our amazing brain and the power of our thoughts.  Our brain storage capacity is astonishing.  The average persons only uses
.001%  of their brain for intellectual activity.  It’s estimated that Einstein used 10% of his brain.  Our brain was created for infinite ability to think and learn.
“I want to know God’s thoughts, the rest are details.” – Albert Einstein
It’s estimated that 65-85% of disease is mentally or spiritually rooted.  Traditional medicine is quick to prescribe pills to “manage’ disease caused by stress.  Unfortunately medication will never get to the root cause.  My goal is to find the root of all disease or dysfunction instead of treating the symptoms.  For health and wellness we must address all aspects, including the physical body, soul and spirit.
PastedGraphic-4It’s All in Your Head
A large part of your reality is literally in your head.  What you think affects your entire body.  When your thinking becomes toxic you cannot function effectively.  With every thought there is an electrical and chemical reaction. According to Dr Leaf, a neuroscientist, it is  a false teaching that the left side of the brain is academic and the right side of the brain is creative.  This is a popular idea but it is not scientific.  The fact is our brains are like a puzzle.  As we look at a puzzle our left side of our brain will process from details to big picture, whereas the right side will process from big picture to details.  The two sides mirror one another.  If the left and right side are out of harmony with each other, your body will release toxic chemicals.  If synergy doesn’t occur the electrical / chemical channels are disrupted and stress will result.
Branch Out
Nerve cells in the brain look like a tree.  The more you use your brain the more branches you will grow.  When you rest, the branches that are not firm go to a “recycle bin”.  You have the recall but you do not have the comprehension of the memory.  Intelligence will appear as a lot of branches.  Strong memories appear dense whether they are healthy or  toxic. The more you link memories, the more you have the ability to use the information effectively.  There is no purpose to fill our brain with data we cannot use.  In todays world,  information is increasing but our knowledge management is decreasing.  This information overload creates a stressful condition that is not productive.  This could eventually cause an intellectual crisis that is beyond our imagination. The good news is even years of damage is reversible.  Fortunately we have control of our thoughts.  The thoughts stimulate an emotion that affects the attitude which affects the behavior.  For this reason, you should never allow a thought to go through your mind without filtering it to see if it’s good or garbage.  By doing this we have the God given ability to manage our stress and positively affect our health and wellbeing.  It’s not just a matter of “speaking good thoughts” but a matter of actually believing them.  The belief will influence an electrical / chemical chain reaction that will change the physical health of your body.
It’s Not Rocket Science… it’s Brain Science
Interactions from the external world to the internal mind is through your senses.  The senses create and electrical impulse that goes through the hypothalamus which is the chemical factory the brain.  The entire endocrine system from mouth to anus is controlled by the hypothalamus.  This then controls hormones, serotonin levels and metabolism.   You need an electrical / chemical reaction for a memory to develop.  Even a subconscious memory can spark the same reaction and a feeling is developed.  It can completely change the way you are processing information from your senses. You have two main types of feelings.  Fear and Faith.  Under these broad categories falls all the other emotions.  Every emotion has a corresponding chemical.  Studies show that fear based chemicals are simply a distortion of faith based chemicals.  As we get an emotion the hypothalamus starts pumping chemicals and sets them flowing throughout the body.  These chemicals actually carry feelings.  You can see now that grudge holding, bitterness, anger and resentment will directly affect your health.  This is where the advice to “love your enemies” can be one of the biggest health secrets known to mankind.
The Original Teachings On Thought and Imaginations
As a Christian Pastor and counselor I find it fascinating that science is repeatedly confirming what the bible teaches.  As technology develops and we learn more, we discover that there is not a conflict between science and the belief in God.  In fact science is the beautiful reflection of God’s intelligence and creativity.  I understand that my Christian perspective may not be shared by all, but I challenge you to ask yourself how such a intricately formed body and mind could come about with out a creative genius?
What You Feel May Not Be Real
It’s important to understand that memories we are building can simply be perceptions and not facts.  If we reinforce these perceptions over time the same reaction can occur.
For example:  As a child you were embarrassed by your teacher while reading in front of the class.  You might develop the perception that you are stupid and you cannot read well.  Over time your “memory tree” develops branches that become like thorns.  They are toxic memories.  As these memories are reinforced it becomes a stronghold in your mind.  When these negative emotions are continually released your body will go into a natural protective behavior.  The result will be a chemical release of adrenaline.  Eventually a host of health problems in the body will result if this pattern is repeated for various “thorns”.
We must learn to conquer these false perceptions first by becoming alert to the feeling of uneasiness that coincides with this emotion.  We should never ignore or repress these feelings.  The awareness of the emotion is the first step in managing the reaction.  If you do not intervene you will repeat the vicious cycle where thoughts and emotions cause toxic chemical reactions in the body.  It feels “real” because those emotional chemicals are actually flowing through the body.  The negative health consequences are very real and disease can result.
It’s Free
You have the ability to  change your thoughts and build short term memory.  As these new factual healthy thoughts are reinforced they can bypass the chemical reaction.  If new information flows through the hippocampus to the frontal cortex it leads to the area where free will resides.  This is the location where you can accept or reject the information.  Free will is a gift from God and it puts you in control of this process.  Your brain will go through an “ask – answer response” through coordination of the left and right brain.  This happens at the rate of 400 billion actions per second.  Amazing!  A rejected thought will simply become heat energy.  A thought that is meditated on will again grow more branches on the “trees” and become part of your memory and perception.  If you don’t capture your negative thoughts they will become a virtual thorn tree.  You can think of it as toxic emotions being stored in the thorns of the memory.  Some common examples of thorns might be unforgiveness, bitterness or rejection.
From a Christian Perspective
If you share my Christian beliefs or are curious to understand what the bible teaches please continue to explore further.  It’s amazing to me how these teachings  correlate with the science of the body and brain.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh  (for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds),  casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;
2 Corinthians 10:3-5

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Philippians 4:8

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.  As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9

“You will know them by there fruits.  Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?”
Matthew 7:16

The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.
Matthew 13:22

Be careful that no one is deprived of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness should begin to grow and make trouble; this can poison a whole community.
Hebrew 12:15

Let there be no more bitter resentment or anger, no more shouting or slander, and let there be no bad feeling of any kind among you.  Be kind to each other, be compassionate.  Be ready to forgive others as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:31-32

“Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it;  I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.
Jeremiah 33:6

For they are life to those who find them and health to all their body.  Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:22-23

The bible teaches the only way to remove thorns is by address the issue through repentance or forgiveness.  When we forgive we are not excusing behavior, nor does it insist on reestablishing a relationship with the offender.  Forgiveness is simply releasing the hurt over to God’s hands and removing the burden from yourself.  Forgiveness does not mean that the memory will go away, but the chain reaction will stop and the brain will become functional.  In this way, forgiving the root of anger, bitterness, rejection and pride can directly impact  the physical, emotional and spiritual condition of the body.  Since God created us with such complexity he also provided a way to heal and bring peace into our lives.
